Welcome to The Secret Garden! For all
of you who have purchased our live wreaths,
topiaries or silk creations we hope that you
are still enjoying them as much as we enjoyed
creating them.
It was just five years ago that I created
my method for designing live succulent wreaths
and it all happened quite by accident.
I had been a fan of sempervivum (hens and chicks)
for many years and decided I would try to plant
some in a large wreath frame. I enjoyed the wreath
over the summer months and into the cool, crisp fall.
A blustery and cold winter season blew in to State
College in early October that year and my hens
and chicks wreath began to go dormant. Since the
wreath was so large, and it would have been difficult
to bring inside, I decided to leave it outside on my
picnic table. The cold winds blew and the snow and
ice pelted down on the hens and chicks wreath all
winter long. I assumed that my hens and chicks
wreath would be no more when spring came back to
State College, PA.
Spring Finally Arrived in early April
and we had several mild, warm spring days. I
began poking around outside hoping for that
first sign of spring "green". I happened upon my
hen and chick wreath and discovered,
much to my surprise, several new clumps of
growth that were hens and chicks. A good friend
suggested that I begin to make the wreaths and
sell them. With my previous floral design background
and my broad experience in gardening I decided
to start a business where I could combine the two
entities and The Secret Garden was born!
